Having said that, it’s not all bad news for those who want to see the fight take place as Dan Rafael of ESPN has reported that Mayweather retracted the MGM reservation simply because he now has his eye on the larger T-Mobile Arena instead.
“The source said the date is still the one Mayweather and McGregor plan to have their welterweight fight on, likely at the T-Mobile Arena,” Rafael wrote. “Once they have a deal, Mayweather Promotions can ask the commission to add the date request—typically a formality—to a future agenda.”
Addressing the MGM reservation on Monday evening, Ariel Helwani also stated that the T-Mobile was always the plan and that remains to be the case.
His promotional company have also reserved the arena on August 25 for a weigh-in.
The as yet unannounced fights the following evening will be shown on Showtime, Mayweather’s long-time broadcaster of choice.
Fighters from the Las Vegas resident’s stable are expected to feature on the undercard, including Badou Jack, who could face WBA world light-heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly.
